This year, Anant Chaturdashi will be observed on September 17, 2023. The festival holds great importance for devotees of Lord Ganesha, as it is believed that on this day, Lord Ganesha bestows his blessings and takes away all the obstacles and difficulties from the lives of his devotees.

The word ‘Anant’ in Anant Chaturdashi means ‘eternal’ or ‘infinite’. The festival is named after the eternal and infinite form of Lord Vishnu, known as Lord Anant, who is worshipped on this day. Devotees perform various rituals and ceremonies to seek blessings from Lord Anant and to express their gratitude for his divine presence in their lives.

One of the main rituals observed on Anant Chaturdashi is the immersion of Lord Ganesha idols in water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, or the sea. The idol is taken in a grand procession, accompanied by music, dance, and chants, to the immersion site. The atmosphere is filled with joy and devotion as people bid farewell to their beloved deity.

The immersion of the Ganesha idol symbolizes the return of Lord Ganesha to his abode in Kailash, while taking away the misfortunes and obstacles of his devotees. It is believed that the immersion of the idol cleanses the surroundings and purifies the hearts and minds of the devotees.

Another important ritual performed on Anant Chaturdashi is the tying of Ananta Dhara, a sacred thread, on the wrist. This thread is usually made of silk and is tied with a special knot known as the Ananta knot. It is believed that wearing this thread brings good luck, prosperity, and protection from evil forces.

During the festival, devotees also offer prayers, perform aarti, and chant hymns in praise of Lord Ganesha and Lord Anant. They visit temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha and seek blessings for a prosperous and obstacle-free life. Special food offerings, known as prasad, are prepared and distributed among family, friends, and the less fortunate.

As Anant Chaturdashi is an important festival, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion across India. The festival brings people together, strengthens their faith, and fosters a sense of unity and harmony among communities.

Story of Anant Chaturdashi (Anant Chaturdashi 2023 katha)

According to the story of Mahabharata, Kauravas had defeated Pandavas in gambling by deceit. After this the Pandavas had to give up their kingdom and go into exile. During this period the Pandavas suffered a lot. One day Lord Shri Krishna came to the forest to meet the Pandavas. Seeing Lord Shri Krishna, Yudhishthir said, O Madhusudan, tell us the solution to get out of this pain and regain the kingdom. After listening to Yudhishthir, God said that all of you, including your brothers and wives, should observe the fast of Bhadra Shukla Chaturdashi and worship the eternal God. On this Yudhishthir asked, who is the infinite God? Tell us about these. In response to this, Shri Krishna said that this is the form of Lord Vishnu. In Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu remains in eternal sleep on the bed of Sheshnag. It was Anant Bhagwan in Vaman incarnation who had covered all the three worlds in just two steps. They neither know their beginning nor their end, that is why they are called infinite. Therefore, by worshiping him all your troubles will end. After this, Yudhishthir observed this fast along with his family and again got the throne of Hastinapur.
